It is hard to believe that I am almost finished with my junior year. I thought that I would never make it to my senior year, but now I am looking into grad school and trying to figure out what I am going to do when I gradate. Today I found out about Spokeo.com via a friend that posted something about it on facebook. I went to check it out and found out that quite a bit of my person information was listed on this website, including my cell phone number. I am unsure how this site gathered all this information about me. After looking up several family member and friends I figured out how to remove myself. I went to remove myself and a couple of my family members and then i found out that you can only remove two people per e-mail address, which I thought was kinda crappy. So go check it out and remove your personal information by clicking on privacy at the bottom right side of the screen.

Alpha Xi Delta at Iowa Wesleyan College Hosts AmaXIng Challenge

Local sorority to host AmaXIng Challenge: Step It Up walk/run
to raise funds to find missing pieces of the autism puzzle

Mt. Pleasant, Iowa - The women of Alpha Xi Delta’s Beta Chapter at Iowa Wesleyan College will host “The AmaXIng Challenge: Step It Up “on April 11th 2010 at Iowa Wesleyan College. Teams will participate in a 3K walk/run to raise funds and awareness for Autism Speaks, Alpha Xi Delta’s national philanthropy partner.

“While there is evidence of the importance of early childhood diagnosis and intervention for children with autism, critical funding for autism research is lacking,” said Carlee Jensen, Alpha Xi Delta’s Beta Chapter President. “We are hopeful the southeast Iowa community will join us in our effort to find the missing pieces of the autism puzzle and support our AmaXIng Challenge and Autism Speaks.”

I am very frustrated with technology right now. I went to do my assignment that was due last night and I could not log on because there was some sort of error on the page. I tried repeatedly today and was not able to get on until just a few minutes ago. I had my entire assignment typed up and waiting in word, but because there was a problem with the page my assignment was late. To them it may have just been a minor problem but if affected my grade and makes me very mad.

SEO

I think that Iowa Wesleyan College could use SEO in various different ways. If we started posting more pictures and video's on the internet then we could link the videos and pictures back to Iowa Wesleyan College. I also think that when Iowa Wesleyan College is being searched for the different pictures and video will show up. All in all before we can get to far into SEO we first need to start putting more information up on the internet. I think that if we are able to increase the amount of Iowa Wesleyan College related material on the interent we would have a much better way to use SEO. When we post information about a sporting event we should make sure to like the other school to the information, picture of video that way they are more likely to link to us in the future.

How Iowa Wesleyan Could Use Youtube

After reading the article about Frostberg University I was curious what was on YouTube from Iowa Wesleyan. I was very surprised to find that there were not just random videos of students, but pages and pages of choir videos. I think that choir is doing a great job using You Tube, but where is the rest of the school. If I was looking at schools via YouTube I would assume the only thing at Iowa Wesleyan was choir and a tiny bit of football. I think that we could film many more things on campus to show prospective students that we are more than just a school with a choir. We should show people how diverse our campus is and what kinds of events are available for students to attend. Even a group of students just goofing around would make Iowa Wesleyan appear more fun.

This photo says so much. The man in the picture really brings it all together because that evokes emotion. We have all seen a pile of bricks before but when you know that pile of bricks was his house it makes it so much more real.

How IWC could use Flickr

After reading the articles at communityorganizer20.com and techsoup.org I think that there are many way that Iowa Wesleyan College could utilize Flickr. I think that Flickr would be a great way to show prospective students the campus. I know every takes a campus tour, but then you just see the campus at that point in time. I took my tour in the winter and did not really get a chance to see how beautiful the campus could be in the spring and fall, and I didn’t get to see those cute little squirrels that live on campus. I also think that Flickr would be a good way to show parents who do not have the opportunity to visit campus what happens and how things are going. I know that if my sister’s college offered regularly updated pictures I would want to look at them and see what was going on. I think it would be a great way to communicate with people who are not regularly on campus.

Cosmo Article

So I was reading my monthy Cosmo and came across and article titles "Want a Kick-Ass New Job" and one of the three jobs mentioned was a "professional tweeter". They talked about being a social networking expert or working in public-relations. I found this to be funny that they talked about this in Cosmo.

Phone Etiquette

I watched a video about cell phone etiquette on Media Shift and very much agree with much of what was said about a time and a place for cell phones. The one thing that bugs me the most is when people talk on their cell phones in a resturant. This bothers me because I am a waitress and I hate it when I go up to a table to take their order and they are either on their phone or they start ordering and there phone rings and they tell me to wait a minute while they answer the call. I think that during a meal or while at a resturant your phone should be put on silent, or at least vibrate so you can enjoy your meal, then you can resume your busy life afterwards.

Ethics and technology

I read an article about Amazon's kindle and how Amazon has too much control over the device. The article talked about how Amazon has actually deleted books from the database, causing them to be removed from all kindles that had purchased the book. Amazon claims that the reason they were deleted was because they were bootlegged copies and they said they returned money to everyone who had purchased the book. This has not only happened with kindle but also with the Apple iphone. Apple has the right to remove any app at any time for any reason, so when your iphone updates apps will automatically be removed if Apple has deleted them. The issue here is if we all go digital and paper becomes obsolete like we all say it will some day. What will happen when a book is deleted? When books were banned they could not remove every copy so that when the ban was eventually lifted the book still existed for us to read. Now with this digital world is a book is deleted it will be gone forever and will not be recovered. I do not think that any company should have the right to delete anything off of your device. I understand that it may be a bootlegged copy but if I purchased it you should not have the right to remove it.

After reading the Copyright Basics I have decided that it is almost impossible to live without causing some type of copyright infringement. I think that the rules were set in place for a reason, but they do not really fit society. We all know that plagiarism is bad. We all know we should not claim someone else’s work as our own, but the line between right and wrong starts to blur when we get on the topic of music. It seems as if music has different rules, even though legally it doesn’t. Who has not used one of the many available file sharing programs? I know I am guilty along with my mom, sister, and grandmother. File sharing is illegal, I think we all know that, but is it illegal to let someone borrow a CD of yours. Is it ok if they don’t make a copy of it or is it still illegal? I think it is impossible to only allow the person who paid for the music to use or listen to it. I don’t know how many times I have let friends listen to my CD while they are in my car. Where should we draw the line?

Media Survey Results

I found some interesting things and some things I expected to find. I found that very few people listen to online radio and those who did listen to it do not do it on a very regular basis. Many of them still listened to radio when they were in their car but said otherwise they are usually listening to their ipod. Some even listened to pod casts on a regular basis.

I also learned that people still use print newspapers. I asked them about when they read newspapers and many people said that they read them when they went home. Several people read their hometown newspaper online, though most of them did not do it on a very regular basis.

When asked bout television many of them said they never remember watching a antenna television except for a few who said they did when they were very young. I asked them about what channels they watched most often and both the discovery channel and cartoon network were mentioned often.

Not very many people read magazines online. Many people read magazines on a monthly basis. Some favorites were game informer, sports illustrated, Cosmo. Although not many people actually have subscriptions to these magazines they still find a way to read them on a regular basis.

I did not really find any things that really surprised me except the online radio. I thought more people would listed to online radio than do. I am glad to know that newspapers still have a place and they are not completely obsolete yet.

Blog Analysis Assignment

The title of the blog I followed was World of Psychology http://psychcentral.com/blog/.

The authors were a group of people, some authors only posted once others posted multiple times. The authors do have biases, many of them wrote off of their previous experiences addressing issues that they have encountered. This is a professional style blog but the entries are more informal.

This is a general psychology blog. The content is both informative and sometimes entertaining. The blog was updated a few times a week sometimes more sometimes less. Most of the content was original. There was only a couple of entries that provided links to more information.

The site that the blog was on was created in 1992, but i could not find a date that the blog was started. In searching the archives I found some interesting things about facebook and twitter.

I had trouble identifying different links. It is obvious that this blog is not for professionals but for amateurs interested in psychology or someone who is taking psychology courses. There were not a lot of sites that linked to this blog mainly because the blog name is also the title of a book so when I did a search the book is what came up.

The blog does use comments. I do not think the screen the comments first because every once in a while I ran across comments that either did not make sense or were very insensitive. On some of the posts there are quite a few comments and if the comments is directed to the author then the author would respond. Some of the same people would comment on different entries but it did not happen that often. I think for the most part the community are people who are living with or are interested in mental illnesses. Many people were commenting on their own experiences.

I think that the visual design supports the blogs purpose, I just wish there was an easier way to navigate the page. I had trouble answering some of these questions for the assignment because I was not sure how to go about finding the answer. I could not find a way to search past entries I just had to keep going back to previous pages which takes a while when there are a few posts a week. I liked the visual aspect of it but the navigation could use some work.

I wold rank this site about a 4. I found very useful information here and even stories of people that entertained me. The only issue is that I had trouble keeping up with the posts just because they are fairly long and I usually did not read the entire thing unless the topic really interested me.

PRSA assingment

After reading the PRSA website I have learned a lot about the history of Public Relations and the ethical guidelines that they go by. It is amazing how long public relations have been around and how they have stayed the same, but also changed so much. Also I can understand how it could be difficult to follow ethical guidelines when the company you work for wants you to say something untrue. I would be hard to know that you were going to lose your job for being ethical. I do not think that I would ever be interested in a career in Public Relations. I have learned a lot of interesting things in this class and on the website, but I could never see myself making a career out of it.

Fast News

Unfortunately Dr. Habashi fell on campus and broke her leg on Wednesday. This was an amazing example of how fast new media is. There was a post on facebook right after it happened and it seemed like everyone knew within a couple of hours. This was amazing to me how fast the news spread.

CMC - Text messaging

I read an article that discussed texting behaviors among teen and preteen children in the UK and the US. In 2007 the number of text messages sent and received surpassed the number of phone calls made and received. I found it very interesting that in Britain in August of 2007 nearly 4000 text messages were sent a second, and 5 billion were sent during the entire month. The article continued to discuss academics compared to text message rates. They talked about the phonetics that are used to create "text speak" and how children shorted words to be able to put everything they want to say in 160 characters. It is found that children who are using more textisms were those with higher scores on the verbal reasoning tasks on standardized tests. I found this very interesting because I know when I was in high school teachers always complained about text language because they said they were tired of it showing up in papers and reports that they graded.

Old media vs. New media

After reading a few articles on ojr.org I realized that old media and new media really are not that different. They both report on the same stories and have the same type of content. It is still just pictures and words, but how we access it is completely different. New media is much faster than old media and in many situations is even cheaper than old media. When I lived at home with my parents I used to read the paper everyday, that is when I did to start the day. Now that I live on my own I have a tighter budget. I have looked into subscriptions to different newspapers and in the end I always decide that it is more cost effective to just go online and read it. I do prefer to actually be holding what I am reading, but is it really worth the cost when you are just going to throw it out later.

One bad thing about New media is that most of the time the writer of the article is not given credit for their work. How many times have you looked up a story and found hundreds of the exact same story? When things were printed the author was more likely to be give credit than they are now. Now it is just so easy to copy and paste the article, why would you take extra time to make sure the right person got credit for it.

Although I think that Old media still has its place I think that it is eventually going to become obsolete, just like buying Cd's. I think eventually everything will switch to New media just because of the convenience.

So Far Behind

I didn't realize how far behind I had fallen when it comes to technology and communication. I finally got igoogle set up after a few days of trying to figure it out. It took me forever to figure out how to make a new tab and then how to get blogs to show up on the new tab I made. I hope I do not find the rest of the class this frustrating once I learn how to operate everything.

After reading this article I would have to agree with the idea that there is far to much information out there for us to process effectively. I know that I have had this problem several times while looking for research to write a paper. I spend more time researching the topic than actually understanding and writing on the topic. Although some of this article was a little difficult for me to understand. I do think that we need a better way to search so that we can get more relevant information faster and we can then be more effective.
